Democratic and Republican Primary Battles Highlight Ideological Divisions
DETROIT — The Democratic Party’s progressive faction aimed for a significant victory in Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary. However, the race between Abdul El-Sayed, a leftist candidate, and Rep. Haley Stevens, a moderate contender, ended too close to call early Wednesday.
El-Sayed, a former Wayne County Health Department director, was supported by figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Meanwhile, Stevens had the backing of establishment leaders, including Sen. Chuck Schumer.
In another race, Rep. Wesley Bell of Missouri defeated former Rep. Cori Bush, backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, supported by significant outside funding.
High-Stakes Michigan Showdown
El-Sayed held a slight lead over Stevens as the results were counted. Both candidates emphasized party unity. Over $80 million was spent in this primary, with substantial funds coming from outside groups in favor of Stevens.
The Senate primary in Michigan is crucial for Democrats to maintain control over this contested seat. El-Sayed promoted policies like “Medicare-for-all” and called for abolishing ICE, facing criticism from the establishment for his past remarks.
Other Primary Highlights
In Michigan’s 7th Congressional District, William Lawrence, co-founder of the Sunrise Movement, defeated moderate Democrats. Lawrence, supported by progressive groups, will face GOP Rep. Tom Barrett in the general election.
Centrists had victories to celebrate. In Missouri’s 1st Congressional District, Bell defeated Bush, with substantial funding aiding his campaign. Bell plans to uphold promised changes and resources for the community.
Trump’s Influence
In the Republican primaries, candidates backed by President Trump showed strength. Rep. John James won Michigan’s gubernatorial nomination, a position to succeed term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Similarly, in Kansas, state Senate President Ty Masterson, endorsed by Trump, prevailed among gubernatorial contenders. This race presents a prime opportunity for a GOP victory as Gov. Laura Kelly’s tenure ends.
