Democratic Concerns on Antisemitism Arising Within Party

Rep. Becca Balint, D-Vt., discussed to CNN a troubling incident involving antisemitic remarks within her party. A fellow House Democrat reportedly dismissed antisemitism with the stereotype that ‘all the Jews are rich.’ Balint shared her concerns, together with other Jewish Democrats, about increasing antisemitism impacting political figures like California state Sen. Scott Wiener.

Balint, visibly shaken after witnessing Wiener receive backlash from anti-Israel activists, reflected on the heckling directed at him due to his support for Israel and Jewish heritage. This reaction has stirred apprehension among Jewish politicians, including Balint, who support progressive ideals yet face conflict because of their stance on Israel.

Balint expressed, “I know at some point there will be a day of reckoning because I still believe that Jews should have a homeland.”

Despite agreeing with some criticisms against Israel regarding Gaza, Balint emphasized her belief in a two-state solution, ensuring safety and security for both Israel and the Palestinians. She voiced fears about potential backlash from some supporters due to her views.

Jewish Democrats are increasingly feeling pressure over their stance on Israel. New York City comptroller Mark Levine articulated the concern that supporting Israel has turned into a political litmus test, overshadowing other progressive issues.

Miichigan state Rep. Noah Arbit shared his unease, stating antisemitism is masquerading as criticism of Israel. He pondered whether Jewish individuals can align themselves with political movements that harbor hostility towards their identity and community.
