Democratic Party Faces Uproar in Maine Senate Race

Graham Platner, the progressive Democratic nominee for the Senate, has retreated to his home in Sullivan, Maine, after facing serious allegations. His residence, a light-blue Greek Revival farmhouse, has become a center for discussions amid turmoil in his campaign, which was disrupted by accusations of rape against him.

Platner, an oysterman who recently secured his party’s nomination, announced he is contemplating his future plans. Leading Democrats in Washington and key progressive allies have called for him to withdraw from the race. However, he remains undecided.

According to state law, Platner has until Monday to decide whether to withdraw. Should he choose to do so, the Democratic Party in Maine must select a new candidate by July 27. The stakes are high in this pivotal race to unseat Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Reasons for Platner’s Delay

Platner revealed to his campaign team during a private call that he wishes to use his position as the current nominee to influence the selection of his potential successor. He aims to have a say in who might take his place.

The Maine Democratic Party has expressed frustration over what it perceives as an attempt to sway the nomination process. “We have repeatedly reiterated to Graham Platner’s team that they have no role in determining our U.S. Senate nominee,” stated Devon Murphy-Anderson, the party’s executive director, in a video statement.
