The Democratic Women’s Caucus (DWC) has unveiled a comprehensive list of policy priorities for the upcoming Congress. This comes as Democrats aim to regain control of both chambers.
The agenda, shared with The Hill, focuses on eight pillars, each representing initiatives in policy legislation or resolutions. Key areas include affordable care, equitable taxes for women and families, and education access.
DWC members have introduced over sixty pieces of legislation across these pillars. These range from promoting homeownership to combating grocery store price gouging. A notable proposal involves a collaboration between Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). They aim to establish a federal investment in locally managed childcare and early learning centers.
Moreover, Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) has put forth legislation to offer a $2,000 tax credit for individuals housing older family members. Additionally, Rep. Grace Meng (D-N.Y.) seeks to expand the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, permitting hot food purchases.
DWC Chair Teresa Leger Fernández (D-N.M.) has expressed criticism towards the GOP-backed One Big Beautiful Act. She advocates for a future prioritizing mothers and working families.
Equity remains a focus, with women’s earnings reported at 83.6 percent of men’s as of 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Unemployment rates show women at 3.9 percent, slightly better than the 4.4 percent for men.
President Trump pledged a $5,000 dividend to American adults conditional on Republican congressional control in November.
Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) has incorporated her own dividend proposals in the DWC agenda. Her proposed legislation includes $250 monthly for adults aged 19 to 67, alongside a $2,000 “baby bonus” for new families.
Tlaib emphasizes the importance of economic security, stating “People deserve the right to economic security; our livelihoods should not be sacrificed to corporate greed.”
In other notable economic news, Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve highlights the rising AI demand’s impact on inflation. Additionally, Nvidia’s record stock buyback and a steel plant announcement in Iowa mark key developments with implications for upcoming midterm elections.
