With Election Day 2026 approaching swiftly, Democrats are increasingly hopeful about regaining control of the Senate during the midterms. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer recently expressed confidence in a Democratic victory, stating, We are going to take back the Senate. Republicans thought they had it locked down, but now we are on the path to victory.
Schumer’s optimism followed a shift in the political landscape by The Cook Political Report, which upgraded critical Senate races in Texas and Iowa from leaning GOP to toss-ups. The Republicans, currently in power, face challenges from traditional midterm election trends that typically impact the party in control. Additionally, persistent inflation, high gas prices linked to an unpopular war with Iran, and low approval ratings for President Donald Trump add to their difficulties.
However, Democrats also contend with obstacles, including an unpopular party brand and internal victories by left-wing candidates in primaries, which Republicans portray as extremist. The Democratic strategy relies on securing the open seat in Michigan, where Abdul El-Sayed defeated moderate Rep. Haley Stevens in the primary. Despite El-Sayed’s win, polling shows he has yet to consolidate his party’s base, while former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers easily secured the GOP nomination. Fox News Power Rankings now lists the Michigan race as a toss-up.
Currently, the Power Rankings identify six states as competitive, where neither Democrats nor Republicans have a clear advantage: Michigan, Texas, Iowa, Ohio, Maine, and Alaska.
The Toss-Up States
Michigan
Michigan remains a key battleground with Democratic Sen. Gary Peters retiring. Rogers, the GOP nominee, narrowly lost two years ago and now aims to attract Democrats dissatisfied with El-Sayed’s far-left positions.
Texas
State Rep. James Talarico emerged as the Democratic nominee in Texas, aiming to be the first Democrat to win a Senate seat since 1988. He faces Trump-endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton after defeating Rep. Jasmine Crockett. The race shifted from leaning Republican to toss-up in the Power Rankings.
Maine
Sen. Susan Collins seeks re-election amid Democratic challenges, notably from nominee Troy Jackson, following a tumultuous primary and controversy surrounding previous nominee Graham Platner. The race remains a toss-up in the Power Rankings.
Ohio
In Ohio, Democrats scored a win with former Sen. Sherrod Brown challenging Republican Sen. Jon Husted. Once a battleground, Ohio now leans red, but Brown’s candidacy presents Democrats’ best chance for competitiveness.
Iowa
Iowa sees Republicans defending an open seat with Rep. Ashley Hinson, backed by Trump, facing Democratic nominee Josh Turek. Despite Trump’s 2024 victory in the state, economic challenges make this race a toss-up.
Alaska
In Alaska, Democrats benefit from Mary Peltola’s candidacy against GOP incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan. The presence of another Dan Sullivan on the ballot adds complexity to this toss-up race, according to Power Rankings.
North Carolina
Republicans aim to retain an open seat in North Carolina, with former RNC Chair Michael Whatley facing Democrat Roy Cooper, the ex-governor with strong statewide appeal. The race leans Democrat in Power Rankings.
New Hampshire
In New Hampshire, Republicans seek to flip a Democratic seat as Sen. Jeanne Shaheen retires. Former Sen. John E. Sununu vies for the GOP nomination against former Sen. Scott Brown, while Chris Pappas leads the Democratic primary. Power Rankings rate the race as leaning Democrat.
Georgia
Sen. Jon Ossoff in Georgia faces a challenging re-election with Republican Rep. Mike Collins as his contender. Although Georgia slightly favored Trump in 2024, the race remains leaning Democrat, according to Power Rankings.
Expansion Opportunities
Several states present long-shot opportunities for both parties:
- Nebraska: Sen. Pete Ricketts seeks re-election against independent Dan Osborn. Likely Republican.
- Kansas: Sen. Roger Marshall defends his seat against Democratic nominee Adam Hamilton. Likely Republican.
- Minnesota: The retirement of Sen. Tina Smith presents a chance for the GOP, with Michele Tafoya facing Democrat Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan. Likely Democrat.
