Recently, I secured a victory in baseball, which was much needed after a string of losses. Today, however, I’m stepping away from baseball due to limited engaging games on the schedule. Instead, I’m turning my attention to basketball with two WNBA games presenting intriguing matchups.
Golden State Valkyries vs. New York Liberty
In their second year, the Golden State Valkyries are impressing as a top WNBA team. Expansion teams often struggle, but this isn’t the case here. The Valkyries have balanced inside and outside scoring, making them formidable opponents. Despite having only three players averaging over 10 points per game, the team boasts eight players scoring six or more points, indicating a well-rounded effort.
The New York Liberty entered the season as championship favorites but have faced challenges. Though led by stars like Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones, and Sabrina Ionescu, their 10-10 road record highlights their struggles outside New York. Recently, they’ve found form, winning 10 of their last 13 games and achieving a 13-5 home record with an average victory margin of 13.5 points.
For tonight’s game, I’m favoring New York, considering their home advantage and recent performance. The Valkyries have dominated the Liberty this season, but I anticipate New York preventing a season sweep with a -2.5 advantage.
Washington Mystics vs. Phoenix Mercury
The Washington Mystics haven’t been synonymous with success but are looking promising this year. Absent from the playoffs since 2023, they found future stars in Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen through the draft. These players, along with another high scorer, help elevate the team’s offensive capabilities, focusing less on shared scoring compared to the Valkyries.
Meanwhile, the Phoenix Mercury are struggling this season, managing only a 13-25 record with poor home performance. Players like Kahleah Copper and Alyssa Thomas remain, but injuries and roster changes, including Kelsey Plum’s trade and DeWanna Bonner’s release, have disrupted the team.
Having faced each other two days ago, where Washington triumphed by 10 points, I predict a similar outcome today. Given Phoenix’s instability, Washington at -3.5 appears favorable.
