Deshaun Watson had an opportunity to prove the Cleveland Browns’ confidence in their $230 million investment in him was justified. The game against the Jacksonville Jaguars resulted in a 34-10 defeat. Watson completed 16 of 22 passes for 205 yards, scored one touchdown, but also threw an interception and lost a fumble. While other NFL players had worse performances, the Browns’ offense consistently struggled throughout the game. Watson was not the sole cause of the defeat, yet his performance did little to ease concerns regarding his future in Cleveland.
Reports suggest things may not change soon. Fox Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano shared that Browns coach Todd Monken plans to give Watson a “long leash.” Vacchiano noted, “During my visit to Browns training camp, several insiders told me first-year coach Todd Monken will let Watson remain the starter till at least October, regardless of performance.”
Browns fans are displeased with Watson, especially after he criticized the fanbase, labeling them “disrespectful” following a preseason loss to the Bills. Given his off-field controversies, Watson cannot afford to underperform. Though coach Monken appears patient, fans expect immediate improvement. The possibility of replacing Watson with Shedeur Sanders persists unless Watson starts winning consistently.
In the end, Watson’s ability to lead the Browns to victories will determine how long he remains in favor with both fans and the organization.
