Destin Daniel Cretton’s Journey to Directing Spider-Man: Brand New Day

“There’s nothing better than watching Tom play an awkward scene,” says director Destin Daniel Cretton, regarding Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Cretton praises Holland’s comedic timing and relatable awkwardness.

Growing up in Maui alongside five siblings, Cretton’s mother limited their TV watching. Instead, they engaged their creativity through plays, choreography, and dance routines. On a family trip to California, his grandmother lent him her VHS camera, sparking his interest in filmmaking. Inspired by Hollywood, Universal Studios, and Disneyland, Cretton returned to Maui energized to create movies nonstop.

Movies became a window to the world for Cretton. Through films watched with his family, he learned about other cultures and the universal emotions shared by all. His first job after college, working at a group home for at-risk teenagers, informed his 2013 film Short Term 12. This experience taught him about the maturity and challenges these youths faced.

Cretton’s filmography includes The Glass Castle and Just Mercy, the latter focusing on Bryan Stevenson’s efforts defending death row inmates. His Marvel journey began with Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings, followed by the creation of the Marvel series Wonder Man, leading to his role in directing Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Connecting with Peter Parker’s Loneliness

Cretton reflects on his own experiences in his 20s when he felt directionless and isolated as friends seemed to move forward. This period of his life allowed him to relate to Peter Parker’s feelings of aloneness in the movie.

Working on Shang-Chi was significant for Cretton as it was his first time working in an environment where most of the crew shared an Asian background. This experience allowed him to incorporate personal cultural experiences into his filmmaking process.
