As the previous NHL season drew to a close, the Detroit Red Wings seemed poised to potentially break their playoff drought, which has persisted since 2016. However, they fell short of that goal. Adding to their challenges, recent reports suggest their captain, Dylan Larkin, desires a move away from the team.
According to Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet, Larkin, a Detroit native, has requested a trade. The 29-year-old’s decision stems from the team’s ongoing playoff absences and a strained relationship with Red Wings General Manager and franchise icon, Steve Yzerman. Despite these reports, Larkin, his agent, and Yzerman have yet to publicly address the situation.
Friedman’s report, backed by multiple sources, highlights potential significant changes for the Red Wings. Larkin, selected 15th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Red Wings, has amassed 643 points over 808 games, showcasing his value as a top-line center. With an $8.7 million cap hit, per Puck Pedia, and his contract extending until 2031, Larkin represents an appealing option for many NHL teams.
Recently, Larkin has performed well not only with the Red Wings but also on the international stage. He contributed to Team USA’s success in the Four Nations Face-off and was pivotal in the gold-medal-winning performance of the U.S. Men’s Olympic hockey team in 2026.
Larkin’s contract includes a full no-trade clause over the next two seasons, necessitating his approval for any trade agreements during this period. While this news is not what the Red Wings management hoped for, it might present an opportunity for the team. By handling the trade efficiently, they could secure valuable assets for the future and potentially reignite their playoff ambitions.
