DHS and DOT Investigate Truck Driver Schools for Fraudulent Licensing

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are conducting a joint investigation into truck driver schools. The focus lies on improper certifications and falsified records, particularly concerning commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) issued to non-citizens.

Freedom Haulers Initiative

President Donald Trump will introduce the White House’s new Freedom Haulers initiative. This program aims to create opportunities for military veterans to become commercial truck drivers. It is also part of the administration’s intensified efforts to address issues with illegal immigrant and non-English-speaking truckers.

President Trump’s administration has made our roads safer by taking illegal alien, non-English-speaking truck drivers off America’s highways. Now, through the Freedom Haulers initiative, the president is expanding opportunities for our veterans by making it easier to obtain commercial driver’s licenses once they conclude their service.

The introduction of this initiative will occur with the participation of key figures such as DOT Secretary Sean Duffy, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins, and acting Labor Secretary Keith Sonderling. The announcement will include bringing a truck to West Executive Avenue.

Expanding CDL Eligibility for Veterans

The Department of Transportation plans to extend the waiver period for veterans to obtain expedited CDLs from 12 months to 24 months after their military service. For veterans without prior heavy commercial vehicle experience, CDL training will be available.

Indiana and Wyoming will join the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Even Exchange program, easing military truck drivers’ transition to civilian CDLs.

Werner Enterprises, a trucking company based in Omaha, Nebraska, will announce its intention to hire 1,400 veteran drivers.

Crackdown on Improper Licensing

The administration will continue enforcing stricter English-language proficiency requirements for commercial drivers. The DOT has revoked over 24,000 CDLs as part of this effort. An additional 28,000 CDLs were canceled after being improperly issued to non-citizen drivers.

This initiative aims to enhance highway safety and bolster the nation’s trucking workforce. The announcement follows a series of fatal crashes involving illegal immigrant truck drivers in various states.

Recently, a Pennsylvania State Police trooper lost his life during a roadside inspection when a truck driven by a Haitian national struck him. This driver had acquired a non-domiciled CDL before new regulations were implemented.

Trucking Industry Insights

The Trump administration reports a 7.42% increase in real wages for truck drivers, in contrast to a 3% decline under President Biden. Veteran truck drivers have 42% fewer accidents and cover 98% more miles than their non-veteran counterparts, indicating this initiative will improve highway safety and support supply chain strength.
