At a recent Disney media event, Disney and Epic Games showcased their enhanced collaboration using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. This technology is the same that powers the popular video game, “Fortnite.” Disney has integrated this software into various facets of their entertainment empire, from theme park rides to film and television production.
Connection Between Disney and Epic Games
Disney has been leveraging Epic Games’ technology to create deeper ties with attractions and stories fans love. The Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run ride at Disneyland now connects with an online game within “Fortnite,” illustrating this synergy. This collaboration began around 2024 when Disney invested $1.5 billion in Epic Games, gaining a minority stake. The partnership aims to integrate Disney’s experiences with the interactive world of “Fortnite.”
Expanding the Universe
Jessica Reif Ehrlich, a senior analyst at Bank of America, noted Disney’s goal of creating immersive universes to engage consumers with their characters. This approach sits among competition for consumer attention.
Technology at the Core
Unreal Engine’s real-time 3D graphics technology started in gaming but is now used across industries, including automotive and aerospace. Disney has adopted Unreal Engine for various applications, such as enhancing facial expressions on audio-animatronic characters, like the new pirate figure in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride.
The Evolution to Unreal Engine 5
In 2021, Unreal Engine upgraded to its fifth version, enhancing graphics quality with improved photorealism, capturing Hollywood’s interest. “The Mandalorian” utilized this technology extensively for its virtual sets. Now, Disneyland rides, such as the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, use Unreal Engine to create dynamic visuals like the landscapes visible from Han Solo’s ship.
Creating Immersive Experiences
Asa Kalama from Walt Disney Imagineering highlighted how Unreal Engine allows more dynamic experiences. At Disneyland, variables affected by the crew’s performance in rides can lead to rewards in linked accounts within the “Smugglers Gambit” game.
A New Kind of Storytelling
“You might start a story in the theme park and continue it in this game experience,” explained Bill Clifford of Epic Games. This method facilitates new cycles of interaction, merging park visits with online gaming experiences.
Disney’s partnership with Epic Games heralds the future of interactive entertainment, expanding storytelling into cross-media experiences.
