Magic United, representing 1,700 character performers at Disneyland, is negotiating its first contract with Disney. Discussions are proving difficult. Historically, Disneyland employees have had union representation for years, but roles in the characters and parades sector remained nonunion until workers organized in response to high living costs in California post-pandemic.
This marks the first union contract for these workers, leading to disputes over Disney’s proposals. Disney views the negotiations as setting terms of employment, while the union argues existing benefits are at stake. These include paid parental leave, which the union insists workers currently enjoy, making its exclusion from the new contract a potential loss.
The Los Angeles Times highlighted conflicts beyond health and safety issues. Disagreements include company matches for employee 401(k) plans and a proposal to restrict shift swaps without managerial permissions.
Fox News Digital reached both parties for comment. The union raised concerns about losing benefits, such as paid parental leave and wage increases, despite current inflation. They claimed Disneyland aims to reduce benefits and complicate shift trades for character performers.
Al Vincent Jr., Executive Director of Actors’ Equity, emphasized that removing parental leave contradicts Disneyland’s family-friendly image.
Jessica Jakary, spokesperson for Disneyland Resort, refuted claims about proposed benefit cuts. She defended Disneyland’s commitment to employee welfare and competitive benefits, highlighting ongoing cooperation with unions.
Disney clarified it didn’t aim to limit shift trading, only managing excessive shift giveaways without approval. It confirmed proposing staggered wage increases, noting a 4% increase for the unit by December 2025. Disney differentiates its approach from Florida’s Walt Disney World, pointing out California’s state-provided parental leave payments.
Disney maintains its dedication to reaching an agreement with Magic United, addressing misconceptions in ongoing talks. The living expense challenges in California, where Disneyland is located, intensify the negotiation landscape.
