Diverse Dinosaur Movies Compete in Box Office

This weekend, two contrasting dinosaur movies captured attention at the North American box office. Neither “Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie” nor “The End of Oak Street” managed to overtake “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” nor did they surpass “The Odyssey” for second place. Studio estimates indicate that the film starring Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor slightly edged out “Paw Patrol,” with $21 million to $20.5 million, respectively.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remains unmatched in its third weekend, amassing another $70 million domestically, which brings its U.S. and Canadian total to $785.8 million. Globally, the movie has crossed the $2 billion mark, becoming one of just eight films to do so and the second-fastest to reach this feat after “Avengers: Endgame,” which did so in 11 days. “Brand New Day” achieved this in about 18 days.

In its fifth weekend, “The Odyssey” maintained its hold on second place with $23.2 million, increasing its domestic earnings to $504.7 million. Internationally, the film grossed $98 million, with $36.6 million coming from China, bringing global earnings to over $1.2 billion.

“The End of Oak Street,” debuting with $21 million from 3,446 theaters, exceeded expectations. Internationally, it added $26 million, raising its total opening to $47 million. The film, directed by David Robert Mitchell, features a story about suburban parents transported to prehistoric times. It has an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though audience feedback, with a B CinemaScore, was mixed. PostTrak polls show over half would recommend it to friends.

“Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie,” released by Paramount Pictures in 3,545 theaters, received an A CinemaScore from its audience. This release marks the third “Paw Patrol” film since 2021. Internationally, it has hauled in $69 million.

Other films in the top five included “Katseye: Wild Hearts,” which earned $4 million from 724 screens. “Six: The Musical Live” took sixth place with $3 million, followed by “The Brink of War” with $2.7 million. The Tamil film “Vishwanath & Sons” earned $1.6 million for the tenth spot. Matthew McConaughey’s “The Rivals of Amziah King” made slightly over $1 million. “Tony,” an Anthony Bourdain biopic, brought in $706,676 from 37 theaters and will expand soon.

The summer box office is robust, with ticket sales over $4.2 billion, surpassing the pre-pandemic summer of 2019 by 5.7%. Paul Dergarabedian from Rentrak highlighted that this summer is only $130 million short of the 2013 record, driven by “Iron Man 3” and “Despicable Me 2.” Although this year’s summer might fall short of 2013’s $4.8 billion total, it ranks in the top five for all time. Overall, the year’s box office earnings are nearing $6.9 billion.
