Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts faced a tough decision during the National League Championship Series (NLCS) against the Milwaukee Brewers. The team was trailing 2-0, and Shohei Ohtani was underperforming at the plate. Change seemed necessary as Game 3 approached at Dodger Stadium.
Roberts decided to continue relying on Ohtani, his standout Japanese player. Speaking to the press about Ohtani’s physical condition, including a left knee and right arm issue, Roberts mentioned, “He’s adamant he feels good enough to be in there. He’s close to finding something with his swing. I feel great about it.”
Even though Ohtani is the team’s designated hitter, his postseason average dropped to a mere .150 after two strikeouts in a recent game. Ohtani has also failed to secure extra-base hits or RBIs during the playoffs.
Initially, whether Ohtani should continue in the lineup was a matter of debate. However, after discussions with president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Brandon Gomes, Roberts chose to give the four-time MVP another opportunity.
“He was very convicted that he is onto something mechanically,” Roberts said. “He was adamant that he can help us… So, that’s all I needed to hear.”
Despite the injuries affecting his performance, Ohtani, through his interpreter, confirmed his determination to contribute positively. He mentioned, “The symptoms shouldn’t be the reason why I can’t hit,” and accepted responsibility for his recent performance.
During the regular season, these injuries were significant enough to put him on the injured list. The lack of home runs since August 18 is unusual for him, but Roberts’ trust in Ohtani’s potential remains strong.
The upcoming game is critical for the Dodgers, who aim to regain momentum as the defending World Series champions.
