Dodgers Struggle in NLCS Game 2 Against Brewers
Yoshinobu Yamamoto returned to the mound at American Family Field, a place where he had thrived just a year ago. However, in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, his performance fell short. The Dodgers suffered a 7-4 loss, and Yamamoto’s outing lasted only 2⅔ innings.
Brewers fans rallied behind their captain, Christian Yelich, as he hit a two-run single, establishing an early lead. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had no choice but to remove Yamamoto, who had become famous for his postseason heroics. This departure placed pressure on the Dodgers’ bullpen to manage the challenge of a back-and-forth game.
The Brewers’ bullpen proved impenetrable, shutting down the Dodgers’ offense with five hitless innings for the second consecutive game. Los Angeles ended the game with only three hits. As the series heads to Los Angeles, the Brewers hold a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. The Dodgers must secure victories in four of the next five games at home to maintain their World Series aspirations.
Pitching Duel and Defensive Struggles
The matchup featured Yamamoto against the Brewers’ promising young star, Logan Henderson. Yamamoto allowed three runs and four hits, marking the shortest start of his career. The Dodgers, meanwhile, capitalized on Milwaukee’s defensive lapses, scoring four runs against Henderson, with only two being earned.
The Dodgers’ offensive effort kicked off with leadoff hitter Mookie Betts, who persevered through an ABS challenge to convert a strikeout into a full count walk. Betts advanced strategically on Freddie Freeman’s groundout and capitalized on a wild pitch to reach third base.
Teoscar Hernández, reflecting on the previous game’s loss, emphasized the importance of execution with runners in scoring position. In a strategic lineup change, Hernández batted third, delivering a sacrifice fly that brought Betts home.
Brewers Rally and Maintain Pressure
The Brewers quickly responded, erasing the Dodgers’ lead. Yamamoto struck out Jackson Chourio but allowed Brice Turang to hit an opposite-field double. William Contreras then managed a low slider into shallow left, equalizing the score.
In a reoccurring theme, the Dodgers edged ahead in the second inning, capitalizing on Brewers’ defensive mishaps. Tommy Edman hit a single, and Betts followed with a sharp single that eluded shortstop Cooper Pratt. An errant pickoff attempt brought Edman home, putting the Dodgers briefly ahead.
The lead proved ephemeral. Yelich’s pivotal two-run single in the third inning swung momentum back in favor of Milwaukee following Yamamoto’s exit. The Brewers exploited the Dodgers’ challenging situations throughout the high-stakes match.
Brewers Secure Late Victory
In the fifth inning, the Dodgers regained a slim lead with help from more Milwaukee errors. Freeman’s sacrifice fly allowed Edman to score. But Contreras’ subsequent home run nullified that advantage once again.
Adding to the drama, the Brewers seized the lead in the sixth inning and expanded it in the eighth. RBI singles by Turang and Jake Bauers secured an unequivocal victory, underscoring the Dodgers’ struggles with mounting challenges.
The series now shifts to Los Angeles, where the Dodgers hope to leverage their home-field advantage. They face a significant task ahead, requiring strong performances to vie for a return to the World Series.
