NATO’s top military commander warned that the alliance would take decisive action to counter any attacks on its territory. U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, speaking at the Warsaw Security Forum in Poland, stated that the alliance would destroy anything supporting an assault on allied land and dismantle enemy warfighting systems.
“If the adversary chooses to attack, we will dismantle the warfighting system against us,” Grynkewich stated. His remarks came as tensions with Russia grew due to various drone incursions and suspected sabotage activities linked to Moscow by European nations.
Grynkewich outlined a three-step strategy: blocking, blunting, and breaking enemy forces. While emphasizing NATO’s defensive nature, he assured a robust response to any attack on its 32 member countries. The general stated, “We will fight if attacked. We will stop the attack and thwart their objectives, ensuring any assault proves fruitless.”
The tensions have escalated amid reports of Russian drones entering Polish airspace and other Russian military activities near NATO borders. This comes against the backdrop of Moscow’s renewed strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure despite diplomatic efforts to cool hostilities.
European leaders have accused Russia of employing hybrid warfare tactics, including sabotage and cyberattacks, along with military provocations near NATO territory.
Recent nuclear threats from Russia added to the anxiety. Moscow warned of using nuclear weapons if NATO tried to isolate Kaliningrad, a heavily militarized Russian region in the Baltic. Grynkewich did not directly name Russia in his speech, but his words targeted Moscow.
Grynkewich emphasized that NATO is practicing its strategy through military exercises and enhanced readiness. He reassured that NATO is prepared to defend tonight if necessary, but stressed the importance of constant vigilance.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, in response to Russian warnings, highlighted the alliance’s defensive mission, urging Russia to cease its actions in Ukraine. Grynkewich assured that NATO was committed to collective defense, aligning with U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for increased defense spending among allies.
The Warsaw Security Forum gathered European political and defense leaders amid concerns about Russia’s actions and the possible risks to NATO’s eastern borders. Grynkewich’s remarks aim to solidify confidence in NATO’s preparedness to handle potential threats and highlight the ongoing commitment to collective security.
