Dogs May Process Speech Like Human Infants, Study Finds
A recent study conducted in Hungary and published in the journal Science explores how dogs might interpret human speech. The researchers discovered that dogs use a strategy similar to that of human infants to identify words within continuous streams of speech. Specifically, they listen for consonants to distinguish where one word ends and another begins.
The study involved tracking brain activity in dogs as they processed spoken language. The findings suggest that while humans possess unique language abilities, dogs could have adapted to understand certain elements of human speech.
The research could alter the way we understand communication between humans and dogs, highlighting the potential for dogs to pick up on linguistic cues that are also integral to early human speech development.
