Even before her passing at age 80, Dolly Parton had laid out plans for her musical legacy. She mentioned in various interviews that she had ‘hundreds, hundreds, even thousands’ of unreleased songs. Parton disclosed that she deliberately prepared recordings meant for release posthumously. Following her recent death, there is revived interest in a mysterious song locked inside a Dollywood time capsule, not set to be opened until 2045.
Why It Matters
Dolly Parton was one of the most productive songwriters in history. Her career, spanning over 60 years, included thousands of songs. Parton’s fans may look forward to discovering these unreleased pieces for many years. Unlike other artists with issues over unfinished recordings and ownership, Parton had organized her music for future release in new forms.
“I am a lucky person because I’ve got hundreds, hundreds, even thousands of songs and a big part of them have never even been recorded,” Parton said.
The archive contains sufficient material for both future compilation albums and new releases.
“There’s enough stuff to go on forever with my music to do compilation albums, to do actually new and original stuff,” she added.
Parton planned guide versions of her songs including click tracks and vocals to allow for comprehensive production in the future.
“I am purposely trying to put songs down for that very purpose,” she stated, allowing any arrangement to be made.
Future Releases
Parton anticipated that producers could reimagine her songs 50 years into the future. Her preparations ensured that her music could continue evolving with future generations.
“Anybody could produce that. Any producer, anywhere in the world, a hot producer, when I’m gone, they could take my songs, just the click track of my vocal and build a complete arrangement around that,” she explained.
Parton wanted to prevent the complications seen with archives left by other artists.
“I’m one of those people that believe in being prepared,” she said. “I don’t want to ever leave my stuff in the same shape like Prince, or Aretha, or anybody that don’t plan ahead with that.”
Dollywood’s Time Capsule
A mysterious yet unreleased song is reportedly locked in a time capsule at Dollywood. Parton expressed regret about sealing it, as she currently cannot access the recording. Set for release in 2045, the song ensures that ‘new’ Parton music could emerge two decades from now.
Parton’s Passing
Representatives stated that Dolly Parton died after ‘bravely facing a brief battle with cancer’ at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville. The type of cancer was not specified.
“It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness, but sadness lies with us, not with Dolly,” Bryan Seaver, Parton’s nephew, wrote.
Her health had been a concern in months prior, with canceled performances and treatment for various health issues, though cancer was never disclosed publicly before her death.
Dollywood’s Establishment
Dollywood, the theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, was rebranded in 1986 after Parton partnered with Silver Dollar City. It has become a significant part of her legacy, holding the unreleased song that captivates the curiosity of many.
What Lies Ahead
Given Parton’s previous statements about her recordings, fans anticipate new releases. However, the most awaited track may remain out of reach until 2045 when Dollywood’s time capsule is opened.
