Crete-Monee senior Dominic Jackson is dedicated to his team. Coach John Konecki’s call of ‘steamroller’ signals Jackson’s time to shine. This formation ensures Jackson receives the ball in short-yardage situations.
‘Running lets me contribute to the team and score,’ Jackson said. ‘I boost both the offense and the team overall.’
Jackson’s performance led Crete-Monee to a 44-0 victory over Hillcrest on Friday. With three touchdowns in the first half, he was key in establishing an unassailable lead. Jackson achieved 48 yards on eight carries with runs of 2, 19, and 3 yards.
The 19-yard touchdown was unexpected as Jackson navigated through defenders to score. Coach Konecki noted, ‘With Dom, we look for 3 yards. Anything extra is a bonus.’
By halftime, Crete-Monee had surged to a 41-0 lead. Senior quarterback August LaBranche contributed 133 passing yards, including a 59-yard touchdown to Monte Calvin-Bowsky. Calvin-Bowsky’s impact extended beyond that, bringing in a 40-yard kickoff return and a fumble recovery.
Isaiah Jordan added an interception and recovered a fumbled kickoff, while Keegan Quaderer recovered a blocked punt.
Jackson’s football journey began in 2018 after moving from Indianapolis. He has undergone significant physical development since then. ‘There’s been a lot of working out and eating,’ Jackson said. ‘I know controlling my weight is crucial.’
Hillcrest, now 0-2, remained scoreless after a previous loss to Thornwood. They managed just 49 yards, with senior running back Devan Watson gaining 33 yards on six carries. Jackson’s defensive efforts contributed significantly.
Prior to the season, Crete-Monee faced offensive challenges. The graduations of key players left gaps that needed filling. Jeremiah Stonewall intended to be a key player before he left for Grayson in Georgia.
‘This is high school football,’ Konecki remarked. ‘We recreate productivity every year.’
Jackson is also recognized for his athletic versatility. Already receiving a football offer from Bemidji State, he competes in wrestling and track. ‘He’s a three-sport athlete,’ Konecki said. ‘It’s rare, but it’s benefitted him greatly.’
