A drone strike ignited a fire near the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates, emphasizing mounting risks of conflict. Authorities described it as an ‘unprovoked terrorist attack,’ though no party was held directly responsible. There were no injuries or radiological threats reported.
The UAE, having accused Iran of recent drone and missile assaults, hosts air defenses and personnel from Israel. The incident has escalated tensions over the Strait of Hormuz, critical for energy, and under a U.S. naval blockade.
U.S. President Donald Trump signaled military readiness against Iran, issuing warnings via social media following a conversation with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump’s pattern of deadlines for Iran, followed by retreats, continues. Meanwhile, Iran appears ready for both retaliation and diplomacy, according to Mohsen Rezaei, a military advisor to Iran’s supreme leader.
The fire at the Barakah plant, which can supply a quarter of UAE’s energy needs, results from drones entering its western border from Saudi Arabia. The UAE intercepted two of them and is investigating the source. Iran, along with allied Shiite militias in Iraq, has previously targeted Gulf states with drone attacks.
Saudi Arabia condemned the incident, reporting interception of three drones from Iraqi airspace. The Barakah plant was developed with South Korea and became operational in 2020. Despite the attack, the plant remains safe and functional, according to UAE’s nuclear regulator and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Yemen’s Houthi rebels, funded by Iran, once claimed targeting the plant during its construction in 2017, an assertion denied by Abu Dhabi.
Nuclear Programs in the Middle East
The UAE’s nuclear agreements with the U.S. ensure it doesn’t engage in domestic uranium enrichment or plutonium reprocessing, contrasting Iran’s program. Iran’s uranium is near weapons-grade, generating suspicion of military ambitions. Controversially, U.N. inspections have been limited, especially after the recent conflict with Israel.
Israel remains the presumed only nuclear-armed nation in the region, while Iran targets near Israel’s Dimona site during conflicts. Nuclear facilities have become frequent targets in global conflicts, notable in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and Iran’s Bushehr plant faced allegations of attacks without direct damage.
Potential Escalation
The ceasefire remains fragile, evidenced by continuing skirmishes and diplomatic endeavors losing traction. Israel and the U.S. discuss resumption of assaults on Iran, revealed by confidential Israeli military sources. Netanyahu emphasizes vigilance and preparedness for any developments concerning Iran.
Iranian state TV broadcasts display presenters bearing arms, highlighting readiness for conflict. Figures like Hossein Hosseini and Mobina Nasiri publicly pledge their willingness for sacrifice, symbolizing national defiance against adversaries.
