Down 20-7 with 3:30 remaining in the third quarter, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni faced a crucial decision at the 49-yard line. Opting for a delay of game penalty, he chose to punt rather than attempt a fourth-down conversion needing one yard.
This missed opportunity meant the Eagles couldn’t close the gap on the Bears’ lead and gain momentum. Although the Eagles defense managed a three-and-out punt on the Bears’ subsequent possession, Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts experienced increased pressure, resulting in a forced interception during a 4th and 5 play from the Chicago 46-yard line with 27 seconds left in the third quarter.
Chicago capitalized on the mistake with an eight-play, 40-yard drive, lasting over eight minutes. This drive ended with a touchdown from veteran backup Case Keenum, sealing the game’s outcome at 27-7.
During the postgame conference, Sirianni acknowledged, “As I look back at that, I probably should have went for it there… Didn’t like that decision… I like the decision to go for it on the fourth and five. Hindsight, I feel like I should have went for it on the fourth and one and a half.”
Despite recognizing that gaining one yard seemed simpler than five, the Eagles needed significant plays to turn around Monday night’s game. The Bears, led by quarterback Case Keenum, outperformed the Eagles with total yards reaching 375 to 248. Philadelphia also lost the turnover battle 3-0.
The loss acted as a wake-up call for the Eagles, who narrowly defeated the Washington Commanders and Tennessee Titans in earlier games. Their performance hasn’t lived up to its potential thus far.
Philadelphia’s next challenge awaits in Week 4 against the Los Angeles Rams.
