French health authorities have reported the first confirmed case of Ebola in the country. The patient is a doctor who had traveled recently to the Democratic Republic of Congo, where a new outbreak of the virus began last month. The doctor tested positive for Ebola and is currently receiving care in a designated healthcare facility in stable condition, according to the health ministry.
Efforts are underway to trace individuals who may have had contact with the patient. These contacts will be quarantined for 21 days and monitored closely, as per health ministry guidance.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control indicated that the risk to residents within the European Union remains low. The Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly the northeastern Ituri Province, is the focal point of the current outbreak. Reports from the World Health Organization confirm that at least 260 people have died, and there are over 1,000 confirmed cases in the region.
Conflict in Ituri Province has displaced many residents, exacerbating conditions that facilitate the virus’s spread and complicating containment efforts. The Congo is facing its 17th Ebola outbreak in recent decades. This outbreak involves the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which lacks specific vaccines or treatments.
