Kevin Hassett, Director of the National Economic Council, spoke on Sunday to address concerns about rising fuel prices. He expressed hope for a deal with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which could lead to a decrease in energy prices.
Hassett stated, “We expect energy prices to drop significantly once there’s a deal,” during an interview with Fox News’ Jackie DeAngelis. This anticipated decrease might provide the Federal Reserve with an opportunity to lower interest rates.
These remarks coincide with Kevin Warsh’s recent swearing-in as the new Federal Reserve chair, following his nomination by President Donald Trump. Warsh’s appointment marks a significant change after a period of tension between Trump and former chair Jerome Powell.
Discussing the Federal Reserve, Hassett emphasized the importance of its independence and expressed confidence in Warsh’s decision-making abilities. “I respect the independence of the Fed and the intellect of Kevin Warsh,” he said, expecting Warsh to make decisions based on data.
Meanwhile, President Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated a potential resolution to the ongoing conflict. Trump announced that an agreement with Iran and allied nations had been mostly negotiated after discussions with global leaders.
The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, disrupted since the conflict began, is a crucial element of this tentative agreement. Hassett mentioned that this could allow new oil reserves in countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE to become operational once the strait reopens.
“Once refineries are running at full capacity again, a significant oil flow could commence,” he explained. Hassett also noted a decline in oil purchases on the spot market, as buyers expect prices to decrease soon. This development is a positive indication for the market.
Regarding broader inflation concerns, Hassett identified signs of potential relief. This includes the expansion of TrumpRx to lower prescription drug costs and reduced government-imposed environmental regulations intended to cut costs.
