Ed Carpenter, a veteran IndyCar driver, is gearing up for his 23rd Indianapolis 500. He feels confident about his team’s performance and his car’s readiness. Apart from his driving duties, Carpenter is also involved as a racing co-owner. He eagerly anticipates the upcoming Freedom 250 Grand Prix scheduled for August in Washington D.C., which promises to attract a large audience to the world of IndyCar racing.
In an interesting highlight, the Indianapolis 500 will feature Curt Cignetti, Indiana Hoosiers head football coach, as the pace car driver. Driving the pace car is a unique role that can influence the race, unlike ceremonial gestures in other sports. Cignetti’s task involves maintaining a speed that ensures the race cars achieve optimal tire temperatures.
Recently, Cignetti was seen practicing at the Brickyard, preparing to lead the field in a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X. This impressive vehicle boasts a 5.5L twin-turbo V8 engine, generating over 1,000 horsepower for the rear wheels. An additional electric motor contributes 186 horsepower to the front axle, showcasing its power and performance capabilities.
Sarah Fisher, a former IndyCar driver and experienced pace car driver, offered guidance to Cignetti. Her insights are invaluable as she has participated in nine Indianapolis 500 events. Together with the Corvette’s America 250 paint scheme, Cignetti will lead the pace laps for the 110th Running of the Indianapolis 500. Coverage of the event starts at 10 a.m. ET on Fox.
