Ed Markey, a key figure among Democrats supporting transgender rights, successfully defended against a challenge from younger contender Seth Moulton in the Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary. This victory positions Markey for a third full term in the Senate.
Markey, known for his progressive stance, has represented Massachusetts in Congress for almost five decades. His campaign focused on maintaining his progressive credentials, which helped him overcome Moulton’s push for generational change. Notably, Markey stood out as one of the few Democrats openly supporting transgender rights, especially regarding sports participation.
“Trans athletes should be able to play,” Markey told The New York Times, emphasizing Massachusetts’ values.
Moulton, in contrast, argued that focusing too much on these issues contributed to Democratic losses in 2024, expressing concerns about fairness in sports for young girls.
Massachusetts remains a Democratic stronghold, having not elected a Republican senator since 2013. Therefore, Markey’s stance is unlikely to impact his chances in the upcoming elections in November.
Markey’s victory underscores another win for progressives. As co-author of the Green New Deal resolution, he enjoys the support of prominent progressives like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. His primary success also reflects a setback for the broader push among Democrats for generational change, a sentiment fueled by recent political turbulence.
Despite other longtime incumbents being replaced by younger candidates, such as John Larson losing to Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin, Markey retained his seat. This follows his 2020 triumph over Joe Kennedy III, a candidate symbolizing a desire for change in leadership.
