Egypt Criticizes Refereeing After World Cup Loss to Argentina
During the World Cup round of 16 match in Atlanta on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan was seen in a heated argument with French referee Francois Letexier. Egypt lost 3-2 to Argentina, sparking controversy over officiating decisions.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) released a statement on Wednesday condemning what it viewed as unfair refereeing. According to the EFA, the team experienced biased treatment which resulted in a significant comeback by Argentina, scoring three goals in quick succession.
“Defending the rights and interests of the Egyptian national team is a responsibility that we carry with full conviction and determination,” the EFA stated, emphasizing the importance of fair play.
FIFA’s chief of refereeing, Pierluigi Collina, responded by defending the integrity of match officials. He called for constructive discussions but dismissed any unfounded allegations against referees, noting that such claims can lead to negative consequences for officials and their families.
Key issues arose when Egypt’s second goal, seemingly scored in the 58th minute, was disallowed after a VAR review. It concluded that Marwan Attia fouled Argentina’s Lisandro MartÃnez before the goal. The EFA criticized the VAR system’s application, which they believe contributed to the loss.
Collina explained the process, stating that if a foul affects the buildup to a goal, the VAR will suggest an on-field review. He defended the decision, asserting that Attia fouled by treading on MartÃnez’s foot.
Despite this setback, Mostafa Ziko scored, giving Egypt a 2-0 lead. However, Argentina quickly gained momentum with a goal in the 79th minute, which Lionel Messi assisted. This marked the onset of Argentina’s winning streak.
Further controversy arose when Hassan signaled racial abuse allegations following Argentina’s winning goal. After the game, he alleged bias from the soccer establishment in favor of Messi and Argentina. Saafan Elsaghir, Egypt’s goalkeeping coach, received a red card, and several Egyptian players were booked with yellow cards.
The EFA statement concluded by highlighting the importance of integrity, transparency, and fairness in officiating at the World Cup level. The association emphasized the frustration felt by Egyptian players, staff, and fans, who demand fair treatment and respect under the laws of the game.
