El Niño is intensifying, with projections indicating it will persist through fall, winter, and even into spring 2027. Columbia University climate scientist Azhar Ehsan emphasized the certainty of this duration, stating the probability of El Niño lasting until spring is between 99% to 100%. Similar findings are echoed by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, which forecasts El Niño will remain for the next six months.
The upcoming El Niño is anticipated to be notably strong, with a historical acceleration rate, heading toward ‘super’ strength during the fall or winter. Brian James, Nexstar’s chief meteorologist, predicts substantial weather impacts. This pattern has influenced the current hurricane season, increasing Pacific activity while reducing Atlantic activity.
El Niño’s effects will differentiate between the northern and southern regions of the United States. Generally, northern states can expect warmer and drier conditions, contrasted by cooler and wetter weather in the southern states. Despite these trends, occasional cold fronts may still bring colder air into the central U.S., affecting the northern Plains, with some snowfall across northern areas, as clarified by James.
The Climate Prediction Center anticipates El Niño’s strength will diminish from ‘very strong’ to ‘strong’ by early spring, with a transition to ‘moderate’ later.
