Elgin Lanes Celebrates A New Era Under Family Ownership
Tyler Fender and Jake Bruce find Elgin Lanes appealing for its wooden lanes and relaxed setting. Fender states the lanes surpass others in quality.
In February 2025, Fanny Kwok-Ng acquired Elgin Lanes, located at 401 Shepard Drive. Over the past year, her family has revitalized the venue. Wu, the manager, notes positive feedback on these changes. “The lanes are much improved,” Bruce remarks, though Fender finds no improvement in his game.
Initially opened in 1964, Elgin Lanes retains its original wooden lanes, now refurbished. The bowling alley, expanded from 20 lanes to 30 in its opening year, has always been family-run. Wu recalls his mother’s decision to purchase the alley. Despite his suggestion to invest in a strip mall, she chose the bowling business, drawing Wu back from Kansas to manage it.
The previous owner maintained the facility through repairs and upgrades, including a new roof and HVAC system, but it had started to decline before the Kwok-Ng family took over. Regular patrons and leagues played a critical role in its survival.
Wu has overseen significant improvements. Projects included upgrading bowling pin machinery and sanding wood lanes. Discussions with regulars, who value the friction and curvature wood lanes provide, convinced him to refurbish rather than replace them with synthetic alternatives.
Upon completion, the U.S. Bowling Congress conducted an inspection and renewed the lanes’ certification, granting them a gold standard. “Bowlers see a huge difference from last year,” Wu shares. Owner of eight restaurants previously, Kwok-Ng expanded the arcade, removed some pool tables, and conducted promotions.
Elgin Lanes’ appeal extends across generations. While most local alleys have closed or been bought by chains, Elgin Lanes stands as a multigenerational gathering spot. The retro vibe with essentials like food, a renovated bar, a few pool tables, a private banquet room, and a lounge area is refreshing, Wu believes. High school students increasingly engage with bowling as a sport.
Recent bar renovations include new counters, flooring, fresh paint, and furniture, offering a full-service bar. The arcade has been expanded with new games and 10 pinball machines, hosting monthly tournaments attracting international players.
Future plans involve a new bar entrance, an outdoor patio with seating, and enhancements to the event room like interactive features and a stage for live music.
The alley will celebrate this new beginning with a ribbon-cutting event featuring free bowling, food, drinks, raffles, and prizes on Wednesday, October 28, from 2 to 6:30 p.m. RSVP to Marilyn C. at (224) 363-4210.
