Emergency Road Closure on Kennedy Expressway Due to Retaining Wall Collapse Near Jefferson Park
State road officials recently closed an exit on the Kennedy Expressway near Jefferson Park when a portion of a retaining wall crumbled. This has led the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to announce an emergency road closure at the inbound Lawrence Avenue exit on the Kennedy, also known as Interstate 90. The closure came after a concrete retention wall failed early in the morning.
Currently, there’s no estimated timeline for reopening the inbound Lawrence Avenue exit to traffic. IDOT has stated, “The department is inspecting the damage and evaluating the necessary repairs.” They plan to release more information about the scope of needed repairs and any long-term closures as soon as the inspections are complete.
In the meantime, IDOT advises commuters to plan for extra travel time and find alternative routes while the Lawrence Avenue exit remains inaccessible. Drivers should exercise increased caution around work zones, remaining vigilant of workers and repair equipment in the area.
