IndyCar’s IR-28 Chassis Debuts at Indianapolis

This week, IndyCar unveiled its much-anticipated new chassis, the IR-28. The unveiling was followed by two days of testing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s road course with Alexander Rossi of Ed Carpenter Racing taking the wheel.

The IR-28, alongside new engines from Chevrolet and Honda, is set to join the series in 2028. Rossi noted the preparation was exceptional. He remarked, “I’ve been part of new car launches before, and none have gone as smoothly as this.” This sentiment was shared on IndyCar.com, emphasizing the collective anticipation from fans, teams, drivers, and sponsors.

Despite inclement weather impacting Rossi’s track time, the debut still offered insights into the car’s potential changes for the series. “It’s difficult to make a thorough comparison due to the conditions,” Rossi explained. However, he noted that only one sensor needed replacement on the new vehicle, showcasing the project’s success. He praised Dallara, IndyCar, and other contributors for a strong start.

The IR-28 represents the first new IndyCar chassis since the DW12, which has been in use since 2012. It was designed to incorporate an Aeroscreen and hybrid system and is anticipated to weigh about 100 pounds less than the current model. Rossi’s feedback has sparked eagerness among drivers to experience the new design.

Next in line to test the IR-28 is Alex Palou, reigning series champion from Chip Ganassi Racing. He will take the wheel on Sunday at the IMS road course.
