Enhance Your Photo Poses with Expert Tips
Stephanie Yeboah, a model and author of Fattily Ever After: A Black Fat Girl’s Guide to Living Life Unapologetically, embraces her unique beauty and believes in using the camera to showcase idiosyncratic angles and poses often seen on the covers of fashion magazines. Despite her insecurities as a teenager, Yeboah’s confidence has grown, enabling her to proudly present herself through creative camera poses.
David Suh, a posing coach followed by millions on TikTok, emphasizes the importance of photogenic skills. According to Suh, connecting with your body and expressing your thoughts through body language are critical components of capturing stunning portraits.
Step 1: Define Your Photo Vibe
When preparing for a photo shoot, consider how you want to appear. Analyze portraits that display emotion such as power, masculinity, femininity, joy, vulnerability, and sensuality. Select three words that resonate with your desired vibe and channel them during your session. Suh finds this exercise helps individuals gain a deeper understanding of their self-perception and uncover limitations imposed by past experiences.
Step 2: Achieve Balance
Posing effectively requires balance, as holding a pose long enough for the camera to capture it can be challenging. Suh suggests practicing warm-up exercises to find your balance. Begin by standing upright and securing your knees in a firm position. Though not comfortable, this military stance may help center your balance; relax your body by shifting weight from one foot to another, mimicking a casual waiting pose. Finally, ensure to relax your joints to ease any tension and appear natural in your stance.
Step 3: Classic Poses to Try
Yeboah recommends classic poses such as the hand-on-hip pose for simple yet confident photos. Cross your legs and place your hand subtly at the top of your butt. This opens your chest and provides an authoritative stance. Another pose draws inspiration from magazine models, encouraging unique angles and positions to add movement and visual interest. Experiment with contorting your face or creating distinct shapes with your body for a striking look.
If seeking a powerful expression, try the wide-leg power pose, spreading your limbs wide to establish a commanding presence within the frame. Alternatively, the catch-me-in-action pose offers dynamism. Whether crouching, jumping, or interacting with your surroundings, movement adds interest and engages viewers.
Step 4: Experiment with Facial Expressions
Facial expressions present an opportunity to showcase emotion in your photos. Instead of staring directly at the camera, Suh encourages you to explore different angles. Adjust your head up, down, and side to side to convey a range of emotions with varying chin angles. Yeboah advocates gazing slightly downward for an editorial, cool demeanor, letting your hands play a role in highlighting your features.
For a joyful look, try closing your eyes with a big grin, projecting innocence and happiness. Avoid staring directly at the camera; focusing on a nearby object instead creates a more candid, content appearance.
Balancing creativity and comfort during your pose exercises will take practice, but Suh advises nurturing the skill like a muscle. It’s important to reassure yourself while exploring new poses, embracing any unfamiliar feelings.
