Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, in a recent Newsweek interview, accused Israel of promoting a misleading narrative that depicts Turkey as a regional threat. This comes amidst heated exchanges between Turkish and Israeli leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s description of Erdogan as a ‘tyrant’ at the United Nations General Assembly. Erdogan emphasized that Turkey maintains significant disagreements with the Israeli government but is not seeking to provoke conflict.
Erdogan asserted, “A misguided narrative aiming to portray Türkiye as a threat has emerged in Israel. We regard this as linked to Israel’s domestic politics and electoral climate.”
He added that Türkiye opposes policies violating international law and destabilizing the region, while affirming no hostility toward Israelis or other nations.
The Battle for Syria
Tensions between Israel and Turkey are notably evident in Syria. Erdogan supported Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa following Bashar al-Assad’s downfall, influencing Trump’s acceptance of Sharaa’s regime. Though Netanyahu initially supported Assad’s overthrow, he quickly ordered strikes in Syria, concerned about Sharaa’s background.
These tensions intensified recently when Israeli strikes followed a Turkish delegation’s departure from the Abu al-Duhur Air Base. Turkey condemned these actions, blaming Israel for undermining Syrian sovereignty and complicating regional stability.
Erdogan stated, “We want Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national unity preserved.” He criticized Israel’s actions for making regional peace more challenging.
Testing Alliances
The Israel-Turkey rivalry has extended into the Eastern Mediterranean, with Turkey’s defense agreement with Pakistan and Saudi Arabia contrasted by Israel’s pact with Greece for a defense system. Erdogan challenged Israel’s alliance with Greece but framed Türkiye’s stance as observing rather than confronting.
“Türkiye monitors actions affecting national security,” Erdogan noted.
He underscored diplomacy over conflict, urging NATO and regional partnerships for security.
The U.S. Frontline
Erdogan and Netanyahu vie for U.S. influence, with historical ties to Trump amidst regional turmoil. Erdogan has criticized Israeli military actions and advocated for diplomacy, while endorsing Sharaa’s Syrian regime, further straining relations.
While Erdoğan prioritized Türkiye-U.S. bilateral relations, he pointed out the importance of direct dialogue with Trump on pertinent matters.
Erdogan remarked, “Our multifaceted alliance with the U.S. can enhance cooperation in defense, trade, and regional security.”
