Israeli airstrikes on the southern Lebanese city of Tyre resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals on Tuesday. This attack raised questions about President Donald Trump’s claims of a forthcoming resolution to the Iran conflict. The strikes occurred shortly after Iran and Israel exchanged fire for the first time since a ceasefire was declared in April.
On Monday, both nations announced they had ceased attacks in response to Trump’s call for an immediate halt to the violence. Despite this, Tuesday’s events suggest potential for further escalation.
Lebanon entered the conflict when Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel on March 2, supporting Tehran after U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. Over a million people in Lebanon have been displaced due to Israel’s targeting of Hezbollah, which operates independently of the Beirut government.
Iran maintains that peace is unattainable as long as Israel continues its assaults on Lebanon. Footage on social media displayed smoke rising above Tyre after the strikes, with Lebanese media reporting three deaths. The civil defense in southern Lebanon informed Al Jazeera Arabic that at least eight people were killed, although this figure is yet to be verified.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued an evacuation order for residents in Tyre, urging them to move north of the Zahrani river. They stated Hezbollah’s presence endangers residents’ lives, as the group allegedly violated a ceasefire and targeted Israel’s home front.
Concerns of a prolonged occupation similar to the one ending in 2000 have surfaced due to Israel’s actions in southern Lebanon. Despite Trump’s directive for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to cease strikes, Israeli attacks persisted. Trump told the BBC he had stressed the need for “common sense.” Reports suggest the president’s frustration with Netanyahu is growing, especially after missile attacks on Iran occurred despite his requests.
Trump mentioned to the BBC the possibility of a significant deal, claiming influence over Netanyahu’s decisions. Meanwhile, Iranian Vice President JD Vance expressed confidence in achieving Trump’s negotiation goals. However, Iran remains skeptical about an agreement. Iranian lawmaker Ali Haddad warned U.S. military bases and Israel could become “legitimate targets” if attacks resumed against Iran or Lebanon, emphasizing their commitment to the “resistance front.” Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson for Iran’s National Security Committee, explained that negotiations with the U.S. are seen as part of ongoing battles, maintaining Lebanon’s critical importance to Tehran.
