Recent clashes between the United States and Iran have significantly increased tensions, edging the two nations closer to an extensive conflict. Early Thursday, both countries exchanged blows, with President Trump emphasizing ongoing military pressure on Tehran due to delayed negotiations.
The U.S. launched its attacks shortly after midnight Tehran time, as announced by Central Command. Explosions were reported in Qeshm near the Strait of Hormuz and also in Bandar Abbas, Minab, and Sirik, according to Iranian media.
Central Command confirmed the strikes concluded by 4:30 a.m. in Iran. However, Trump warned of more strikes if negotiations did not progress. Iran reported retaliating with strikes on U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain, but these claims remain unverified. Iran further announced closing the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic, a claim the U.S. denied.
Kuwait responded by intercepting hostile targets, affecting civil aviation, while Bahrain activated warning sirens without explanation.
Background of Recent Strikes
These latest attacks follow U.S. strikes a day prior, a response to Iran reportedly downing an Apache helicopter. Trump’s administration clarifies these actions aim to pressure Iran towards a favorable peace agreement, not as direct retaliation.
Despite Trump’s peace deal reassurances, these military actions cast doubt on the supposed cease-fire declared two months earlier, as noted by Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary-General.
“There is no clarity in this cease-fire with recent escalations,” said Guterres.
U.S. Strikes and Iranian Response
The U.S. Central Command specified targeting Iranian military surveillance and communication, emphasizing self-defense. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed attacks on strategic U.S. bases in Kuwait and Bahrain following American strikes on Iranian facilities. Again, these claims have not been independently confirmed.
In southern Iran, explosions were reported, notably in Hormozgan Province. Iranian media documented impacts, denying attacks on critical gas facilities despite reports of defense activities.
Revolutionary Guards’ threats to destabilize the region further underline the tension. Iran stated its retaliatory strikes targeted U.S. positions in response to earlier aggression, according to IRNA, the state news agency.
Analysis of Water Facility Strikes
A New York Times analysis indicated a U.S. precision strike hit a drinking water facility in southern Iran. The attacked area, enduring sweltering temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, affects about 20,000 residents due to disrupted water service.
Images of the impacted facility revealed precise damage, consistent with a targeted attack, but Central Command has not released a detailed comment. Despite the damage, local authorities restored a temporary water supply within 12 hours.
U.S. ‘Secret Mission’ Revelations
President Trump hinted at a covert mission on live television, involving clandestinely ferrying millions of barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz. However, senior military officials clarified this aligns with reported efforts to guide commercial vessels safely through the strait, avoiding Iranian detection.
The U.S. has managed to escort hundreds of commercial ships, an operation previously detailed by The New York Times. Still, Trump’s claims of oil reaching the market remain unsubstantiated.
Strikes continue as tensions escalate, with both nations poised for further actions should diplomatic efforts falter.
