Seventeen-year-old Eugene Dobberfuhl has made a significant contribution to his hometown by constructing a gaga ball pit at Jim Hansen Park in South Elgin. Dobberfuhl conceived the idea, secured $3,000 for the project, and organized the necessary labor as part of his Eagle Scout service project.
If gaga ball is unfamiliar, it’s a popular game at summer camps and school playgrounds. Similar to dodgeball, the objective in gaga ball is to hit opponents’ feet. “The last person standing wins, and it’s a lot of fun,” Dobberfuhl explained.
Dobberfuhl has fond memories of playing gaga ball during his many years at Boy Scout summer camp. He noted its growing presence at schools. As a student at South Elgin High School, Dobberfuhl advanced in scouting leadership, aiming for the esteemed Eagle rank achieved by only about 5% of Scouts. He chose Jim Hansen Park for the project due to its proximity to his home.
“This park holds a special place in my heart,” he shared. “I’ve played baseball there since I was young.” In June, with the help of his troop, Dobberfuhl completed the gaga ball pit to fulfill his Eagle Scout service project requirement.

Hansen Park’s high traffic suggests the pit will be frequently used. “Becoming an Eagle Scout requires hard work and life skills,” Dobberfuhl said. Completing this service project was his final requirement. “I feel fantastic finally achieving this goal,” he added.
South Elgin Parks and Recreation benefited from Dobberfuhl’s effort, said Director Kim Wascher. Another gaga ball pit, also an Eagle Scout project, was added in 2020. “Gaga ball has been popular in our park,” Wascher remarked.
In spring 2023, Dobberfuhl initiated his project by contacting the South Elgin Park District with his proposal. Wascher connected him with potential contributors to fund the $3,000 cost. “This project boosted my confidence in reaching out to others,” Dobberfuhl said.
The ball pit, assembled in mid-June with support from his troop and park staff, stands as a testament to his dedication. “His leadership has left a lasting impact,” stated the park district in a social media post. “Thank you, Eugene, for enhancing South Elgin.”
Dobberfuhl cherishes the sense of accomplishment when seeing his work in action. “Seeing the pit used always brings a smile,” he reflected. “Even when I leave for college, a part of me remains here, showing my contribution to the community.”
He hopes the gaga ball pit will impact park visitors for years to come.
