Europe is currently experiencing an unexpected heatwave that is breaking temperature records, including in the United Kingdom. This has led to government warnings after deaths were reported at sports events in France.
French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari expressed condolences to the family of a runner who died during a race in Paris. According to Le Parisien newspaper, the 53-year-old man suffered a heart attack during the event in the city’s 20th arrondissement. Firefighters were unable to revive him. Although it is not confirmed if heat was the cause, Ferrari hinted at a possible connection. Temperatures in Paris reached 32°C (90°F) in the afternoon.
Ferrari noted, “The events that occurred today (Sunday) during running races are a reminder that practicing sports in extreme heat requires absolute vigilance.” She shared her thoughts with the family and loved ones of the deceased runner and others treated by emergency services.
In Lyon, local media Actu Lyon reported the death of a woman who suffered heat stroke during another sports competition the same day.
Meteo France, the national weather service, reported unprecedented May temperature records, surpassing 30°C (86°F) in many areas, expected to continue through the week.
The United Kingdom also broke its May temperature record on Monday. A heatwave was declared in several areas. The temperature in Kew Gardens, southwest London, hit 34.8°C (94.6°F), overcoming the previous record of 32.8°C (91.4°F) set in 1922, matched in 1944.
The U.K. Health Security Agency issued its first amber health alert of the year, warning about increasing deaths, especially among the elderly during the hottest times.
This unprecedented heatwave is part of a broader pattern of unusual and extreme weather conditions that experts associate with climate change. Such weather extremes, occurring at unexpected times and places, pose increasing risks to the public.
