A Political Controversy
Alex Bores, a House candidate from New York, found himself at the center of a political controversy with the artificial intelligence industry. The tension arose in November, during an anniversary dinner with his wife, Darya, at a vegan restaurant. News reached him that a super PAC, backed by the AI industry, planned to launch attack ads against his campaign.
The Campaign Response
The super PAC held over $100 million to spend against Bores, a significant threat to his candidacy. In response, Bores, who had experience with AI regulation, rewrote a statement from his campaign team to amplify his position against the AI sector.
The Impact of AI Spending
Bores’s strategy partially succeeded. Although he narrowly lost the race, the controversy attracted attention. Four rival super PACs emerged to support Bores, investing $19 million in his campaign. This assistance overwhelmed the opposition’s $8 million, helping elevate his profile in the competition for a Manhattan seat vacated by retiring Representative Jerrold Nadler.
The Outcome
Bores eventually lost to Micah Lasher, who had strong support from Michael R. Bloomberg. Lasher, the chosen successor of Mr. Nadler, reportedly acknowledged that spending against Bores inadvertently helped him gain voter sympathy.
