Excavation for the Trump Administration’s Memorial Arch Project to Begin Amid Legal Challenges
Excavation is set to start within the next two weeks on a site in Washington, D.C. The project, initiated by the Trump administration, involves constructing a memorial arch. This plan faces legal opposition from parties concerned about the impact on historic viewlines. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum confirmed the commencement of work on the Great Triumphal Arch and Military Observation Deck on Columbia Island, positioned between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
Burgum emphasized the architectural significance of the project. ‘This will be one of the great pieces of American architecture, honoring Arlington Cemetery and our capital,’ he stated on X, sharing renderings of the 250-foot-tall arch.
‘ONE NATION UNDER GOD’ will be inscribed on the arch, depicted in white and gold. It features a winged Lady Liberty-like figure and gold eagles.
The project is opposed by three veterans and an architectural historian. Nicolas Sansone, representing these plaintiffs, argued the necessity of congressional approval, which is currently lacking. ‘We believe construction should not proceed and are prepared to address the court,’ Sansone stated.
A National Park Service report supports the arch concept but mentions potential adverse effects on historic sight lines. Renderings from Harrison Design offer perspective on the project’s scale relative to surrounding monuments.
Burgum defended the monument. He referenced historical discussions by past Congresses about creating such a memorial, noting that more than 70 cities globally feature arches. ‘Washington, DC, lacked such a monument for 125 years, and now it will host a spectacular arch,’ he wrote.
This arch is among several Trump administration projects. Other initiatives include renaming the Kennedy Center and refurbishing monuments like the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
