The iconic film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” celebrates its 40th anniversary, drawing attention to Ferris Butler’s claim that he inspired the character of Ferris Bueller. This assertion is examined in a new documentary titled “Saving Ferris Butler.” The film features former “Saturday Night Live” cast members Denny Dillon and Charlie Rocket in Butler’s renowned sketch, “The Leather Weather.”
After a successful premiere at the Quad Cinema in New York City, the documentary returns to the film’s Chicago setting. It will be screened daily from September 18-24 at the Pickwick Theatre in Park Ridge. Tickets are available at pickwicktheatre.com/movie/saving-ferris-butler.
D.B. Frick, executive producer and host of the documentary, sees Ferris Butler as an intriguing subject due to his connections to “Saturday Night Live” and his marriage to songwriter Beverly Ross. Frick recalls meeting Butler 15 years ago and learning of Butler’s belief that he inspired Ferris Bueller, citing a conversation with Del Close, the notable actor and teacher, as a pivotal experience.
Frick highlights the documentary’s broader narrative surrounding authorship and cultural memory. He notes that, despite Butler’s claim, others also believe they inspired Bueller. Frick argues that writers often draw from their surroundings.
The documentary features Q&A sessions with participants and offers giveaways such as hotel stays and meal vouchers. Frick enjoys sharing stories of forgotten talents in humor and culture. “Saturday Night Live” historian Andy Hoglund contributed as a writer and producer, driven by interest in the show’s lesser-known sixth season.
Directed by Julius Olivas, “Saving Ferris Butler” presents a fresh take on Butler’s life and legacy. Olivas was captivated by Butler’s journey and the enduring popularity of “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”
Patrick Weathers, a “Saturday Night Live” member during its infamous 1980-81 season, shares insights in the film. Despite the challenges faced by the season’s cast, Weathers reflects fondly on memorable moments, such as his portrayal of Bob Dylan.
The documentary offers Butler a chance to share his story broadly. He expressed enthusiasm upon discovering the project, noting its potential alongside his own writings on the subject.
