Exploring the Spirit of ’76 at Freedom Plaza

Freedom Plaza, located on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., serves as a key urban space connecting the White House with the U.S. Capitol. This open pedestrian area provides a view into the thoughtful design of the nation’s capital.

The plaza showcases a large-scale representation of the original ‘L’Enfant Plan’ of Washington within its paving. This plan illustrates the complex layout of grand avenues and a domestic street grid, symbolizing the relationship between federal and local powers as outlined in the Constitution.

Currently, the plaza hosts the ‘Spirit of ’76 at Freedom Plaza,’ an installation featuring a statue of Jude Hall. Hall was a Black soldier who served during the Revolutionary War, and his statue is part of a semiquincentennial project commemorating important historical figures.
