Explosion Leads to Arrest at NYC Federal Building

An explosion occurred outside New York City’s 26 Federal Plaza, causing a fire and leading to a significant emergency response on Monday morning. Authorities have taken one person into custody following the incident at the federal building, which hosts agencies like the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The FDNY announced that four individuals sustained minor injuries. While three chose not to be transported for medical aid, one person was taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital.

“This morning an individual deployed an incendiary device outside of 26 Federal Plaza. The individual has been taken into custody and the FBI New York Office is investigating the incident,” the FBI stated to Newsweek.

According to the FDNY, a call was received at 8:30 a.m. reporting the outdoor fire at 26 Federal Plaza, located between Worth Street and Lafayette Street. Two engine companies and two ladder companies were dispatched to the location. By 11 a.m., FDNY confirmed the area was secured, with no units remaining.

Our administration will continue to ensure that every New Yorker is safe in their city — and hold accountable any who threaten that, he added.

Federal authorities revealed that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is examining the incident. As investigations proceed, officials are working to determine the explosion’s cause, with no serious injuries reported.

Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries of New York released a statement to Newsweek, acknowledging law enforcement’s prompt actions. He stated, “I am grateful to law enforcement for their swift actions to stop an attack at 26 Federal Plaza this morning, for successfully apprehending the suspect and for keeping the people of New York City safe. Acts of terror and violence have no place in our City and will never be tolerated. The individual responsible for this must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
