Explosion Outside Federal Building in Manhattan, Suspect Detained

An explosive device detonated outside a federal building in Lower Manhattan on Monday morning. Authorities have apprehended a suspect, according to police sources.

The explosion occurred near 26 Federal Plaza, a location that hosts several federal agencies such as the FBI, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Reports from law enforcement indicated that the explosion came from fireworks placed in a garbage can. The explosion prompted emergency responders to head to the scene, and a man was quickly taken into custody.

The suspect, found with items including an airsoft rifle, carbon dioxide cartridges, halogen lighting, and a helmet, is believed to have targeted the location in an anti-ICE demonstration.

Smoke from the explosion was visible around 26 Federal Plaza. Initial information reveals the suspect was carrying two realistic-looking BB or airsoft guns. One of these was a long gun, transported in a grocery cart.

No gunshots were reported, according to a preliminary review. Video from the site showed heavy smoke and law enforcement detaining a suspect.

Authorities warn of traffic, transit disruptions, and road closures in the vicinity, particularly near Worth Street and Lafayette Street. They advise avoiding the area while the investigation continues.
