Intense Wildfire Activity in Utah
Extreme heat combined with dry and windy conditions sparked multiple wildfires across the Western U.S. over the weekend. In Utah, the Iron Fire in Juab County led to the evacuation of Eureka, a town southwest of Salt Lake City with a population of 1,000 residents.
The Iron Fire, identified first on Saturday, had burned through 34 square miles, approximately 87 square kilometers. Authorities indicated that Eureka and people at a nearby ranch were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Despite the threat, no homes were reported lost. UTAH Fire Info, representing several agencies, reported a successful backburn strategy to safeguard the town.
Kelly Wickens, with the Utah Division of Forestry Fire and State Lands, highlighted the fire’s growth attributable to ongoing drought conditions, emphasizing that it was human-caused and remains under investigation.
Utah’s Governor, Spencer J. Cox, visited the area, acknowledging the extreme fire risks. The Iron Fire is among six active fires in various stages of containment in Utah.
Arizona Battles Wildfires
Meanwhile, Arizona experienced wildfire challenges with a fire near Sedona burning around 300 acres of rugged terrain near Oak Creek Canyon.
Roughly 300 personnel were fighting this uncontained blaze as of Sunday afternoon, with evacuated residents still awaiting clearance to return.
Weather Conditions Escalating Fire Risks
The Western U.S., from the Rockies to the Pacific coast, faced higher-than-average temperatures over the weekend, with predictions of even warmer conditions at the week’s start.
Officials alerted communities about increased fire dangers due to dry, hot weather and low humidity levels.
The U.S. Drought Monitor identifies much of Utah under severe to extreme drought, with similar conditions reported in parts of Arizona and Colorado.
In Colorado, a red flag warning was issued in the southwest corner due to gusty winds coupled with low humidity levels.
Impact of Extreme Heat
Extreme temperatures have detrimental effects, as evidenced by the sad news of three hikers’ deaths in two separate Grand Canyon incidents the previous week.
The forecast across the Southwest indicated temperatures rising up to 108 degrees Fahrenheit, or 42.2 Celsius, in Carlsbad, New Mexico.
Progress in Florida Fires
While the West faced ongoing fire threats, the Florida Forest Service reported significant containment progress on brush fires in western Miami-Dade County.
