An American military aircraft experienced a crash at the U.S. Air Base Spangdahlem in western Germany on Tuesday. The incident resulted in injuries to the pilot, according to a statement from the American military.
The pilot ejected successfully and is currently receiving medical treatment. The crash took place around 2:30 p.m. local time and involved an F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft. Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the crash.
Fire and emergency services responded promptly, as confirmed by the German district authorities where the base is situated. Spangdahlem Air Base, home to an F-16 fighter jet squadron with roughly 20 aircraft, plays a crucial role in supporting U.S. Air Force and NATO missions worldwide. The base comprises approximately 5,000 military and civilian personnel, alongside their families. Between 700 and 800 Germans are employed here as well.
The crash site is being examined by U.S. Army personnel in protective gear. The base has served as a key hub for U.S. operations since the mid-1950s and continues to be vital in supporting NATO activities in Europe and beyond.
Recently, another F-16 crash occurred in Grand Traverse County, Michigan. The pilot from the 149th Fighter Wing of the Texas National Guard ejected and was reported to be in stable condition. This crash, happening during a routine training mission, is also under investigation.
“Spangdahlem is one of the most significant airfields in the region for the U.S. military,” according to the latest updates.
