F.D.A. Investigates Cyclospora Contamination Linked to Taylor Farms Lettuce

The Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) is actively investigating the source of cyclospora contamination in lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms to Taco Bell. Their focus is on the farms in Mexico where the lettuce is grown and the facility where it is shredded. The agency aims to determine how the lettuce became contaminated and whether the contaminated produce has been distributed to other food retailers in the United States.

FDA officials plan to visit the Mexican farms and the shredding facility, reviewing records in an effort to identify the contamination source. Cyclospora is a parasite that causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms, including explosive diarrhea and cramping, which can persist for weeks.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1,644 people reported falling ill after consuming food at Taco Bell, with 94 requiring hospitalization. However, the outbreak isn’t limited to Taco Bell patrons; other individuals have reportedly contracted the infection without having eaten there.

In response to the investigation’s intensification, Taylor Farms has recruited a former Trump White House official. Company executives have engaged with the current administration in efforts to prevent themselves from being publicly identified as the contamination source. They are attempting to dissociate Taylor Farms from the outbreak, as per unnamed administration officials.
