Family Mourns Loss of Haitian Student Amid Immigration Challenges
Over the weekend, the family of Pierre Damas Bel held a burial service for him. Bel, a 20-year-old Haitian student, had his legal immigration status revoked in July. This came after the Supreme Court allowed the Trump administration to terminate temporary protections that affected hundreds of thousands of Haitians.
A month after he was required to wear an ankle monitor by immigration authorities, Bel took his own life. His tragic death highlights the severe pressures faced by immigrants who lose their legal status.
William Brangham provided this report. He is an award-winning correspondent and producer. He frequently contributes to the PBS News Hour and hosts the PBS series Horizons.
