Michael Douglas, in his new memoir titled “One Helluva Ride,” reveals intimate details about his past relationships. The 82-year-old actor discloses an affair with a co-star significantly younger than him during the filming of “Basic Instinct” in 1992. Contrary to popular belief, it was not his on-screen partner Sharon Stone but actress Jeanne Tripplehorn with whom he was involved.
Douglas details his strong feelings for Tripplehorn, despite their substantial age difference. He confesses that he was even prepared to leave his then-wife, Diandra Luker, for her. Douglas and Luker were living separately at the time, though they officially divorced in 1995.
His relationship with Tripplehorn lasted through the movie’s production, but they eventually went separate ways. Douglas expresses his admiration for her, acknowledging her talent and the cherished time they spent together.
“Basic Instinct” features Douglas as homicide detective Nick Curran, entangled with a crime novelist and murder suspect played by Stone. Tripplehorn played the role of Dr. Beth Garner, a police psychologist and Curran’s lover.
The truth is, I fell very hard for Jeanne despite our nearly 20-year age difference.
In another revelation, Douglas admits to an affair with Kathleen Turner during the making of “Romancing the Stone” in 1984. For years, both denied their relationship to safeguard their families and the production.
Douglas explains that his close work with Turner led to a genuine connection. Despite being technically married to Luker, they pursued a relationship fueled by mutual respect and attraction.
The relationship ended when Luker visited the set, making it clear her marriage to Douglas, albeit strained, was still active. Douglas and Luker officially divorced in 2000, after 23 years together. He married Catherine Zeta-Jones in the same year, and they have two children.
