Austin Metcalf’s father expressed disappointment about the lack of communication and remorse from the family of Karmelo Anthony. Anthony, a 19-year-old, received a 35-year prison sentence for the murder of Metcalf during a track meet in Frisco, Texas, when both were 17.
The case gained national attention due to social media posts highlighting racial aspects of the crime. Anthony is Black, Metcalf was white, and none of the jurors at Anthony’s trial were Black, though some were people of color. Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett suggested the verdict might have differed if Anthony was white.
In an interview on The Will Cain Show on Fox News, Jeff Metcalf, the victim’s father, criticized those framing the incident in racial terms. He emphasized in early interviews, “Please don’t make this about race, please don’t politicize it,” indicating his wish the situation remained focused on the individual acts.
Furthermore, Jeff Metcalf shared his hope for accountability and remorse from Anthony’s family. “I was actually hoping to show them, I know what happened was terrible. And your son made a horrible mistake. I was hoping for some accountability maybe and some remorse. Neither one was shown,” he revealed.
The interview continued with Metcalf affirming no contact with the Anthonys and no apology or expression of remorse received. After the trial verdict, family members and advocates of Anthony left the courtroom before the sentencing and victim impact statements were delivered.
“They weren’t there for the sentencing and they were not there for victim impact statements,” Metcalf noted. “They left that poor child up there by himself.”
