The Indiana Fever defeated the Phoenix Mercury 86-77 in a heated game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Monday night. The match featured a chaotic confrontation that resulted in five technical fouls and one ejection.
Caitlin Clark, the Fever’s All-Star guard, received a technical foul for clapping. This marked her fifth technical foul of the season, which ties her with Angel Reese for the most in the WNBA.
“They said that Caitlin got it for clapping, so I guess that’s taunting,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said during her postgame conference.
Clark expressed her frustrations about the officiating.
“Yeah, it’s ridiculous,” Clark stated. “I got a technical for clapping. We should all just go on the calendar now and pick a game that I’m gonna be suspended for if I’m gonna get technicals for clapping. I asked [game official] Gerda [Gatling]. Gerda said that I got a technical for clapping, so if any technical should be taken away, it should be that one.”
The Athletic’s James Boyd inquired about her awareness to avoid future technical fouls, considering eight technical fouls lead to an automatic one-game suspension.
“I mean, I’m gonna play with emotion, I’m gonna play with passion, and if they’re gonna give me a technical foul for clapping, then so be it,” Clark responded. “That’s their choice. The league can come back and review that play, and I’d love to hear what they say.”
Clark is not in immediate danger of suspension, but her comments might lead to a fine soon. However, a recent case supports her situation. Dallas Wings All-Star guard Paige Bueckers received a technical for clapping against Atlanta on May 22, which the WNBA revoked by May 24.
Clark ended Monday’s game with 24 points, nine assists, and three rebounds. This performance extended her streak to six consecutive games with at least 20 points and five rebounds, the longest streak in WNBA history, according to espnW. The Fever now hold a 10-7 record, while the Mercury are at 5-13. Both teams will face each other again at Gainbridge this Wednesday.
