Fans Flock to affordable World Cup Viewing at Coliseum

Tickets for the U.S. vs. Paraguay game were expensive at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. Just nine miles away, fans like Jose Santiago and Ivan Gonzalez found a cost-effective option. They paid only $10 to watch the match on big screens at the Los Angeles FIFA Fan Festival held at the Coliseum. This event marked the U.S.’ first World Cup game on home soil in 32 years.

Santiago and Gonzalez expressed their excitement about the experience. “We bought these tickets at the last minute, not knowing what to expect,” Santiago shared. “We’ve been blown away. We definitely want to come back.” Gonzalez added that the atmosphere was engaging and fun.

The festival featured various amenities. These included food and drink options, pop-up tents from brands like Galaxy and LAFC, and a rare on-field experience at the home of USC football. Santiago commented, “It makes you still feel like you’re part of it. It still makes you feel like you’re at the stadium, because we’re all watching the game.”

While some attended the official match, many found the fan festival rewarding. Charlotte Cabeca, although primarily supporting Colombia, appreciated the chance to connect with other fans. “It’s so fun,” said Cabeca. “It’s a really kid-friendly and family-oriented environment. It’s not as hectic as I had anticipated.”

Cabeca plans to attend more fan events throughout the tournament. “It’s the closest we can get and that we can afford,” she noted. She valued the community spirit, stating, “I love that the city is coming together. Even if we’re not at the game, it still brings all of us together as a country.”

Despite the successful evening, some fans voiced concerns about accessibility. Kunal Mehrotra from Koreatown remarked on the financial barrier to attending official matches. “Without the fans, it isn’t really a World Cup,” he said. Monica Unzueta from Maywood echoed this sentiment, suggesting events should be free.

For attendees like Tyler David, the visit to the Coliseum met expectations. “Beyond belief,” David said. “The cultures colliding… Love it.” The USA’s victory over Paraguay added to the excitement. “Christian Pulisic, coach Mauricio Pochettino, all the guys, Timothy Weah. They’re playing at the top of the charts,” David celebrated. “It’s getting me fired up; the fan base, the environment, the atmosphere.”
